The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) is the most widely ratified human rights treaty in the world, and Singapore has signed on to it. That means Singapore has made a promise to uphold children's rights— and has to regularly report to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, a group of independent experts, on how it's keeping that promise.

But governments don't always capture the full picture. That's where alternative reports come in! These are submissions from organisations and individuals that fill in the gaps and share what's really happening on the ground. These reports are taken seriously by the UN Committee and can directly shape the recommendations they give to governments.

Singapore Children's Society is putting together one of these reports and we didn't want to write it without hearing from young people first. So we brought together 14 youth from across Singapore to talk about what matters most to them: violence against children, mental health, and online safety. Through games, group discussions, and honest conversations, we listened to what they've experienced and what they want to see change. We also held a second consultation on 8 September 2025 with youth from our children's home, ensuring their perspectives were part of the conversation too.

Their voices are shaping both Singapore Children's Society's alternative report and a separate youth-led alternative report submitted directly to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child.
